Pune: RTO to issue learner’s licences in colleges, sets up 1st cell at Fergusson | Pune News

PUNE: The learning licence cell and road safety unit started at Fergusson College in Pune hopes to bring about awareness on safety and traffic rules in the students’ community that constitutes a large chunk of two-wheeler riders.
Students meeting the age criteria and passing the online test can apply for a learner’s licence via this cell, which was inaugurated by veteran actor Jaywant Wadkar on Wednesday.
The programme was organized by the state Motor Vehicles Department and Deccan Education Society (DES) under Fergusson College’s Raksha Abhiyan. The event was attended by principal Ravindrasinh Pardeshi and DES chairman Sharad Kunte.
Since a learning licence can be obtained online, the college will provide the application service through its infrastructure and computer system.

The mandatory online test can be given in the college provided the student is applying based on his or her Aadhaar authentication. Upon passing the test, the learning licence will be sent to the applicant’s registered address via Speed Post.
Additional commissioner of RTO Jitendra Patil said the cell will encourage students to follow norms, spread awareness about traffic rules, and instill the importance of carrying a driving licence every time they ride a vehicle.
“It was the first such initiative at Fergusson College and more such cells will be established in other educational institutions,” he added.
Patil said it is easy to get a driving licence but the test to get one has become tougher.
“It is expected that the riders will take all care while on their vehicles and follow all rules accurately. Sometimes, riders want to show off their driving skills while on the road but end up encountering accidents,” Patil said.
