Kartavya Path gets dirty? New Delhi Municipal Council deploys 16 teams | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: To intensify action against encroachers and people littering in the open at the newly-inaugurated Kartavya Path, New Delhi Municipal Council has deputed 16 teams of public health and enforcement departments in this area, including C Hexagon.
A senior NDMC official said that the decision has been taken on the direction of chief secretary, Delhi. “The area has been divided in eight zones and each team has one supervisory staff from public health, one from the enforcement department and two civil defence volunteers. They will ensure no one litters in the open, enters the waterbodies or walks in the green lawns. The team members will have power to issue challan against those violating the norms, while the enforcement department staff will have power to confiscate the items of vendors illegally roaming in the area,” said the official.
Of the 16 teams, eight will be working in the morning shift (6 am to 2 pm) and eight in the evening shift (2 pm to 10 pm). At least, 36 civil defence volunteers will be helping in the drive.
These teams will be managed by senior officials from the departments of enforcement and public health. They will be responsible for supervision and monitoring of activities on a daily basis.
After 20 months of redevelopment, Kartavya Path was reopened to the public last Friday with a cultural festival marking the occasion. Thousands of people flocked to the revamped stretch on the first weekend after it was opened forcing the civic body to get into action. On Sunday and Monday, the council issued 70 challans during the drive against defacement, encroachment, littering and spitting in the area.
“The above decision to form 16 teams has been taken as a pre-emptive measure to avoid encroachment and littering during the coming weekends,” said the official, adding that the teams would be deployed in the area until further orders are issued.
In an order issued by the council on September 11, a list with names of select ice cream vendors and their designated locations was released to avoid any confusion. “There are a total of six vending zones located south of C Hexagon Road, north of C Hexagon Road, south of Man Singh Road (left and right side), south of Rafi Ahmed Road and north of Rafi Ahmed Road. And these have a capacity to adjust 90 ice cream vendors at a time. Besides, there is space for 30 water trolleys. No vendors beyond the list/designated place will be allowed to put up stalls,” said the official.
