Kochi: Phase-II Metro work to start in January | Kochi News

KOCHI: Kochi Metro is planning to start the construction work of its new line from JLN Stadium to Kakkanad in January next year.
As part of the preliminary design and planning works of the 11.2-km long phase-II corridor of the Metro, the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) began a drone-based LiDAR (light detection and ranging) survey on Wednesday.
The survey is being held along the Phase II alignment from JLN Stadium to the second Infopark campus.
The second phase of the Kochi Metro rail received approval from the Union Cabinet last week.
KMRL will begin tendering process inviting project management consultants by the end of this week and a geotechnical investigation will begin by the first week of October. The Metro authority is planning to issue construction tenders by November-end or in the beginning of December.
Phase II of the Kochi Metro will have 11 stations—Palarivattom Junction, Palarivattom Bypass, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, Padamukal, Kakkanad, Cochin SEZ, Chitethukara, Kinfra, Infopark 1 and Infopark 2.
KMRL authorities said the drone-based survey is being conducted to get the latest topographical data along the proposed route.
“The data received from the survey will help in fine-tuning the Metro alignment. It would also be beneficial to plan non-motorized transport initiatives and first and last mile connectivity in the new stretch,” said a statement issued by KMRL. About 75% of the land acquisition as part of the road-widening works from Palarivattom Junction to Infopark has been completed and the remaining land acquisition in this stretch is in the final stage.
As far as the land acquisition for the construction of Metro stations on the proposed line are concerned, administrative sanction from the state government of Kerala is awaited and is expected to be accorded soon, said KMRL authorities.
KMRL authorities have made it clear that the station designs for the second phase extension will be completely different from the existing ones. The agency will implement the Kakkanad extension project as it has successfully implemented the Phase 1A extension of the Metro line from Petta to SN Junction, which was inaugurated on September 1.
