Open canal is human rights violation: Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission | Chennai News

CHENNAI: Failure to cover an open canal that causes health hazard to the residents of the area amounts to human right violation, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) said, directing the Avadi Corporation to pay ₹25,000 as compensation to a resident who fell into an open pit. The commission also directed the official concerned to rectify the issue immediately.
SHRC member D Jayachandran passed the order on Tuesday, on a complaint moved by A Dharanidharan, a resident of Avadi TNHB.
According to the complainant, on December 6, 2019, he went to drop his daughter at her school in Avadi. While returning home, he hit an open canal in the area and sustained injuries.
He further claimed that already 2 children had fallen into the canal and died. But besides repeated complaints authorities have failed to rectify the issue.
He alleged that the inaction on part of the authorities amounted to violation of human rights of not only the complainant but also the right to life of the children and the parents of that area.
Allowing the complaint, the commission said, “In spite of several complaints given by the complainant and other public to the Avadi Corporation, they had not taken any action and the same shows the dereliction in official duty.”
The commission then held that such inaction would amount to violation of human rights and passed the order.
