Pune: Software engineer cheated of Rs 1.7 lakh | Pune News

PUNE: A 37-year-old woman has filed a complaint against her friend from college for duping her of Rs 1.7 lakh.
The complainant had transferred the money via UPI between August 28 and September 5 to the female friend. She realised she had been duped when the friend stopped responding to her calls. She then filed a complaint with the Hinjewadi police on Tuesday.
A police officer said the complainant and her friend had studied engineering in Kolhapur. “Later, they worked in different companies in Bengaluru, but were staying together,” the officer said.
The complainant woman later took a job in an Ahmedabad-based software company, while her friend shifted to New Delhi.
On August 20, the friend contacted the complainant, told her she needed money and said her UPI account was blocked. She asked for Rs 50,000 urgently and claimed someone was helping her resolve the issue with her UPI account. “The friend gave that person’s UPI account to the complainant and asked her to transfer Rs50,000,” the officer said.
After the woman sent the money, two other similar transactions took place on September 3 and 5. The officer said: “When the complainant contacted another collegemate, she was told that this ‘friend’ had duped the classmate in a similar manner.”
