Tamil Nadu: Quack, 71-year-old, who treated patients for 20 years arrested | Chennai News

CHENNAI: A 71-year-old quack who had been treating patients in a clinic he had been running for nearly 20 years at Vengal in Tiruvallur district was arrested on Wednesday and the unit closed. A court later sent the accused, identified as Ramachandran of Bharat Clinic at Nehru Bazaar in Vengal, to jail.
Based on a specific complaint, Tiruvallur district joint director of health services (incharge) Ilangovan and other officials conducted a surprise check at the clinic and asked Ramachandran to produce documents pertaining to his MBBS degree and his registration in the state medical council. Later, the officials filed a formal complaint with the Vengal police who cops arrested him and sent to Puzhal prison after being produced in a magistrate court.
Inquiries revealed that Ramachandran, who studied only till PUC, gained a little knowledge of allopathy and began practising medicine. Further investigations are on.
In August, the Vellore police arrested S Narasimman, a 42-year-old quack who had passed only Class X but was practising medicine for 20 years at a clinic he had set up at his house in a village near Veppankuppam in Vellore district.
Earlier, on June 6, police arrested six quacks for running illegal private health care units for more than a decade in Ambur, Vaniyambadi and Tirupattur towns. The arrested, who police identified as S Palani, 51, K Velan, 49, V Parthiban, 47, C Ganesh, 30, B Jayapaul, 68, and K Govindaswamy, 47, had been treating patients for more than a decade without obtaining any professional medical degree.
