Kerala bus shed that saw unique sit-on-lap protest by students razed | India News

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city corporation authorities on Friday morning demolished the controversial bus waiting shed in front of the CET at Sreekaryam where students had protested — by sitting on each other’s laps — against the residents who damaged the shed in an apparent attempt to stop boys and girls from being there together.
Mayor Arya Rajendran said a new gender-neutral bus waiting centre would be built at the same place. The demolition was done under police protection as corporation officials had anticipated a protest by locals since they were against the students sitting in this shed.
After the students’ sit-on-lap protest on July 2 against moral policing, the mayor had lashed out at the attempt to impede students’ freedom and even assured the demonstrators that a new bus shelter would be constructed for them. To stop students of both sexes from hanging out, the residents had cut short the long steel bench in the waiting shed into three seats such that only one person could sit on each seat.
The students CET alleged that they regularly faced opposition and even abuse from locals when male and female students sat there together. Hence, they weren’t shocked by the hostile act and decided to carry out the unique protest, pictures of which went viral on social media.
