Exotic species introduced, not re-introduction, say activists | India News

SHEOPUR (KUNO): Amid the euphoria over the translocation of cheetahs to India, some senior IFS officers, retired and serving, and activists oppose the move, calling it a ‘re-introduction’ of the species.
“Why is everyone calling it a reintroduction? It is an ‘introduction’ of an exotic species, despite the fact that it has a close genetic similarity with Asiatic cheetah,” said a senior IFS officer, requesting not to be named.
“Conservation is turning into show business. Millions of rupees will be wasted on an exotic species on the pretext that such an initiative will save grassland ecosystems,” he said, adding India has myriad conservation issues and an array of species that need immediate intervention to save them from extinction.
