Delhi Electricity Bill Subsidy: How to apply, methods, free units and more


People of Delhi can avail the free electricity scheme from October only if they opt for it, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on September 14, 2022. At a press conference, he shared the methods and ways to avail the free electricity scheme in the capital.
Kejriwal said that electricity bills in Delhi will now become optional. Residents will need to choose whether they want to avail the subsidy or not to get free electricity till 200 units and 50% subsidy for up to 400 units a month. A new Voluntary Subsidy Scheme (VSS) is announced and Delhi residents will have to apply for the subsidy to continue getting the benefits.

With this move, every year, power consumers will be given a choice to continue with power subsidy or not. Kejriwal said both physical and electronic methods will be available for consumers to apply for subsidy. Those who have got their phone numbers registered for bill payment will receive messages for applying to get subsidy.
He added there are total 58 lakh domestic power consumers in Delhi out of which 47 lakh avail electricity subsidy, including 30 lakh who get zero bills and 16 to 17 lakh others who get 50 per cent subsidy.

    In the electronic method, power consumers can give a missed call on 7011311111, a number generated by the Delhi government. They will receive a SMS with a link, and after clicking on the link, they will get a form that can be filled up and sent back.

    The number, 7011311111, can also be used on WhatsApp by sending ‘Hi’ and a form will be sent to a consumer that can be filled up and sent back to apply for subsidy,” CM Kejriwal said.

    Under the free electricity scheme of Delhi government, at present, those whose per month power consumption is less than 200 units do not have to pay any electricity charges and they get their electricity bills with zero amount to be paid. Those whose consumption is up to 400 units, they get a 50 per cent subsidy.

    Consumers are required to scan the QR code on the subsidy form attached with their latest BSES bill.

    Within 3 days of registration through electronic or physical method, a confirmation will be sent to consumers via SMS or e-mail that subsidy will continue.

    To apply for the subsidy, consumers have to apply before the last day of the preceding month. For example, if you want the subsidy from October 1, you will have to apply on and before September 30.
