Exclusive – KBC 14’s first crorepati Kavita Chawla: Last year when I lost the Fastest First Finger round, my son especially got me a TAB to practice typing fast

Kaun Banega Crorepati season 14 has finally got its first crorepati of the season in Kavita Chawla from Kolhapur, Maharashtra. A full-time homemaker, Kavita whose father did not allow her to study after class 12, has lived with the dream of being on KBC for the past 21 years, 10 months. Finally, her dedication and perseverance paid off as she not only made it to the hot seat but also won Rs 1 crore. Kavita spoke at length to ETimes TV recently about her journey, her meeting with host Mr Amitabh Bachchan, bond with her son and how she plans to spend the winning amount.

I have been trying to be on the show for the last 22 years

I am very happy, over the moon because I have been trying to be on the show for the last 22 years. I started trying to be on the show from the year 2000 and now finally I’ve made it. I get emotional while talking about it and have tears in my eyes. I cry thinking about my winning moment. My most cherished dream has finally come alive.

The journey of making it to the hot seat and winning Rs 1 crore has not been easy

This journey of KBC from registering for the show, making it to the hot seat, playing the game and then winning it, has been a long one. It has not been an easy one because even after playing the fastest finger first, there’s an uncertainty of whether you will be selected or not. I would see others making it on the show and sharing their journey, but I was still sitting at home, sometimes I would get sad. I would see the contestants on the hot seat and feel as if I am sitting and talking to Mr Bachchan and would think when this will turn into reality and I would be sitting in front of him.

My family would tell me, “Sabr ka phal Meetha hota hai”

I would talk to my husband and my son. They would motivate and push me. I would take blessings from my spiritual guru. My family would tell me when you make a small house, it gets made easily and very soon but when you’re constructing something big it takes time. Sabr ka phal Meetha hota hai, they would calm me down in this way. They would tell me that my efforts won’t go waste and I am happy it hasn’t.

Big B doesn’t have have one bit of arrogance, attitude or ego

Amitabh Bachchan is such a huge personality and I always fall short of words to praise him. Despite being such a huge personality, he never makes anyone feel that he is a legend or megastar. He doesn’t have one bit of arrogance, attitude or ego. He is very down to earth and humble and he makes everyone feel very normal. Big B makes everyone laugh and entertains people.

Big B appreciated my game and called me “Gyaan ki Shakti”

Big B appreciated my game and called me “Gyaan ki Shakti”. He told me that it is a big thing that after being a housewife, homemaker, full time mother, I’ve been able to reach so far. He appreciated and praised the way I was playing the game.

When I got emotional, Mr Bachchan got up from the seats to wipe my tears

When I got emotional, Mr Bachchan got up from the seats to wipe my tears and offer me tissues. I joke that if Amitabh Bachchan ji is going to wipe your tears, then every woman should cry at least once.

I complained to Big B about my son’s laziness

I chatted a lot with Big B and also complained about my son to Big B. I told him how I have to still give him water and food. He is supportive in other departments but he is still dependent on me. Mr Bachchan made him understand.

Academically I am not strong and I have only studied till class 12th

Academically I am not strong. I have only studied till class 12th but while teaching my son during his school days, I have studied a lot. From play school to his college days, I have studied all his books. My intention was not just to teach him but also to gain knowledge from those books and prepare myself. I had the dream to be on KBC and due to this I kept teaching him and grasping that knowledge. I didn’t go to college for further studies or to get a degree but I taught my son and gaining that knowledge has helped me. Winning Rs 1 crore on KBC is nothing less than achieving a degree.

My son helped me a lot when I would feel demotivated and would cry, he used to cheer me up

My family has been my backbone throughout. My son helped me a lot when I would feel demotivated and would cry, he used to cheer me up saying that my efforts won’t go waste. My husband when he heard I won Rs 1 crore he instantly said that it is my hard work that has paid off. My in-laws also supported me a lot, when I would travel to Mumbai from Kolhapur for interviews, they would look after the house. Had they all been not there I wouldn’t have reached so far.

When I couldn’t crack Fastest Finger First last year, my son got me a TAB to practice

Last year I came on the show and couldn’t crack the Fastest Finger First round. So, when I went back I worked for it. My son got me a tab and he asked me to practise on it. I started typing using both my hands. I would practise only mobile phones also and it actually helped me.

Would use the winning amount for my son’s education and would love to travel all over India

I would use the winning amount for my son’s education. I would want him to study further. My priority will be his education. I would love to travel all over India and visit the nook and corners of our country. I have always been fascinated to travel different parts of India and would love do it.
