Steady spike in new Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu | Chennai News

CHENNAI: More than 100 of the 2,346 active Covid-19 patients were in hospital on Monday when the city clocked 106 new cases among the 498 cases recorded in Tamil Nadu. The state discharged 429 patients and there were 4,995 active cases of Covid-19.
After dropping to around 80 cases a day in the last week of August, fresh cases in the city have crossed the three-digit mark. Due to the steady spike of cases, hospitalisations have increased from 63 cases on August 22 to 105 on Monday, while ICU admissions have shot up from 11 to 19.
Forty-two patients in Chennai were on oxygen beds. During the same time, total admissions in the state rose from 408 to 457 and ICU admissions increased from 45 to 53. “We are seeing repeat infections, particularly among people who are not adequately vaccinated.
People with comorbid conditions tend to develop severe disease requiring oxygen support or ventilation,” said infectious disease expert Dr Subramanian Swaminathan. Barring Perambalur and Ramanathapuram all other districts in the state reported new cases.
After Chennai, Coimbatore reported 48 new cases followed by Chengalpet (46). Kanyakumari reported 28 new cases followed by Krishnagiri (25), Tiruvallur (22) and Ranipet (21). Neighbouring Puducherry had a positivity rate of 11.9% on Monday, and reported 29 positive cases.
