Uttar Pradesh: Mayawati joins ranks with SP in targeting BJP govt | Lucknow News

LUCKNOW: Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati slammed the BJP government in a series of tweets on Tuesday for “clamping down” on demonstrations and protests by the opposition parties, a day after the Samajwadi Party accused the BJP government of stopping its MLAs from marching towards the Vidhan Bhawan in protest against the government policies and rising inflation.
Political analysts say this was probably for the first time that the BSP chief has joined ranks with the SP in targeting the ruling BJP.
“It needs to be seen whether Mayawati has extended an olive branch to Akhilesh Yadav through her tweets or it is a continuation of her attacks on the BJP amid the SP’s accusation that BSP is a B-team of the BJP,” says an analyst.
She said that denying the opposition the permission to hold ‘dharna’ against the government’s anti-people policies and atrocities shows the new autocratic attitude of the BJP regime.
“To threaten people with legal action and arrests is a very damaging attitude of the government,” she said.
BSP chief said the BJP should reflect on its past because it has a history of staging protests outside the Vidhan Bhawan on every pretext.
“Similarly, the way students’ protest against the fee hike by Allahabad University is being suppressed is condemnable. The UP government should listen to the demands of the students with empathy,” she said.
