Chennai: 8 tonnes of goods stolen, five held | Chennai News

CHENNAI: Five men who stole eight tonnes of goods including copper and bronze items from a container yard in Thiruvottiyur on August 8 were arrested on Tuesday.
The stolen goods are part of a 28-tonne consignment transported from Delhi by city-based businessman Saravanakumar by evading GST, police said.
While a court sent the arrested men R Ravi, 42, of Thiruvottiyur, K Hillman Babu, 58, of Manali New Town, and L Narayana Kumar, 40, G Anil Kumar, 55, and N Kireeshan, 50, of Jharkhand and police are searching for two others including the prime suspect, GST officials are questioning Saravanakumar.
Police said the consignment was brought in a container truck by Madhavaram resident Saravanakumar, who runs a firm supplying bronze, copper and iron articles to stores in Chennai and other cities including Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Delhi. On August 9, the yard manager told Saravanakumar the lock was tampered with. He rushed to the yard and found the goods missing.
Based on his complaint, the Thiruvottiyur police registered a case and collected CCTV camera footage which showed the gang members breaking into the yard and taking away the goods in a vehicle. A team led by assistant commissioner Mohammad Naseer traced and nabbed the suspects. Police recovered the stolen goods that had been melted into ingots from a firm near Tiruvallur and seized 8 lakh from the arrested men.
Inquiries revealed that the prime suspect knew about Saravankumar‘s ‘business without proper bills’ and told his men when to strike. The suspect also warned Saravanakumar against filing a police complaint. He also alerted GST officials about the transport of the goods, police said, based on the confession of the arrested men.
