Chorus for Rahul Gandhi as Congress president, pressure on Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee for resolution | Thiruvananthapuram News

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With more Congress pradesh committees favouring Rahul Gandhi to become the AICC president, pressure is mounting on the state Congress unit also to pass a similar resolution. There are reports that the general body of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) would be convened immediately for the purpose.
Several state leaders have indirectly expressed their displeasure over the reported move of Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor to contest the poll and supported Rahul for the top post. He had met party president Sonia Gandhi on Monday. The senior leaders are also of the view that the KPCC general body meeting should be convened when Rahul is in the state with his Bharat Jodo Yatra.
They also feel that the general body meeting held last week should have taken a decision on such a resolution.
Only Rahul can unite Congress, say leaders
The KPCC leadership, however, is reportedly in favour of convening the meeting after the yatra crossed the state’s borders on September 29. The state units of Odisha, Jharkhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Jammu & Kashmir have so far passed resolutions in Rahul’s favour.
Senior party leader Kodikkunnil Suresh MP said: “We do not take Tharoor’s candidature seriously. He did not consult the state leadership before finalizing his candidature. It was his decision.” Former opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said the state leaders would certainly want Rahul to take up the president post. “I am not sure whether Tharoor had discussed his candidature with the state leadership. He has not consulted me,” he said.
“The KPCC will only support a candidate backed by the Nehru family. The party will stand with the official candidate whoever it is,” said K Muraleedharan, MP and former KPCC president. Another former KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran said time had come for Rahul to take up the mantle. “Only he can unite the party and give strength to the organization,” he said, adding that Tharoor is not a seasoned politician and he has no consistent political vision.
