Tamil Nadu: BJP man held for remarks against A Raja and ‘Periyar’ E V Ramasamy | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: Police on Wednesday arrested BJP Coimbatore district president Balaji Uthamaramasamy for allegedly making derogatory remarks against DMK Nilgiris MP A Raja and social reformer ‘Periyar’ E V Ramasamy during a protest organised by Hindu Munnani in the city on Sunday. The Peelamedu police arrested Uthamaramasamy under sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 504 (intentional insult and provocation of a person) of the IPC based on a complaint lodged by Anandha Kumar, a DMK functionary. He was remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.
A police team from the Peelamedu station reached Uthamaramasamy’s house early on Wednesday morning and picked him up for an inquiry. After an inquiry at the police station, Uthamaramasamy was arrested.
Talking to the press before his arrest, Uthamaramasamy said that DMK was misusing its power. “Instead of reining in Raja for his objectionable speech against Manusmriti, the government has arrested me. I stand by my statement and will not retract,” he added.
BJP cadres gathered in front of the police station and tried to prevent police from taking Uthamaramasamy to the court. However, police removed the cadres from the path and took Uthamaramasamy to the court.
Some cadres even blocked Avinashi Road but they were quickly evicted by police. Police detained some cadres for burning the effigy of Raja.
In a series of tweets, Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai wondered why there was no police action for Raja’s alleged anti-Hindu remarks while the BJP leader who questioned him and his acts had been arrested.
BJP national mahila wing president and Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan condemned the arrest of Uthamaramasamy. “BJP cadres will not be afraid of such threats by DMK,” she said in a statement.
